Toby McKeehan (or tobyMac, as he’s professionally known) was raised in the north Virginia suburbs in the shadow of Washington, D.C., where he fell deeply in love with rap music. While going to Liberty University or college in Lynchburg, Virginia, through the middle-’80s, he fulfilled Michael Tait and Kevin Maximum Smith (aka Kevin Maximum), as well as the three close friends created the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling Christian pop group dc Chat, which mixed components of CCM, grunge, and rap.
