This Pittsburgh ensemble deserved a far greater fate than getting known primarily to get a novelty-tinged cover of “Blue Moon.” Baritone vocalist Richard F. Knauss teamed with Fred Johnson, Gene J. Bricker, Ron Mundy, and business lead vocalist Cornelius Harp to create a built-in ensemble. They called themselves after Harp’s hairstyle, the marcel. The group do a string of addresses as demonstration tapes which were delivered to Colpix. The label’s A&R movie director got them cut many oldies at RCA’s NY studios in 1961, one of these getting “Blue Moon.” They utilized the bass intro agreement through the Cadillacs’ “Zoom” and the effect was a big success. It ultimately topped both pop and R&B graphs, and in addition was a global smash. The group ultimately made an appearance in the film Twist Night and day with Dion and Chubby Checker, and documented an 18-cut LP for Colpix. Alan Johnson and Walt Maddox afterwards changed Knauss and Gene Bricker, producing the Marcels an all-black device.
