Jazz-rock combo Ocean Level was shaped in 1976 by keyboardist Chuck Leavell, bassist Lamar Williams, and drummer Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson subsequent their exit through the Allman Brothers Music group; guitarist Jimmy Nalls finished the initial lineup, which in 1977 released its self-titled debut LP in the Capricorn label. Honing its exclusive marriage of rock and roll, blues, and jazz through relentless touring, the group came back to the studio room with an extended lineup including vocalist/saxophonist/keyboardist Randall Bramblett, guitarist Davis Causey, and drummer George Weaver to lower Cats in the Coastline, also released in 1977, implemented in 1978 by In the Advantage offering Paul McCartney & Wings drummer Joe British; although Jaimoe got returned towards the Allmans, Ocean Level documented two even more albums – 1979’s Long Walk on a brief Pier for Capricorn (finally released in the U.S. in 1998) and 1980’s Ball Area for Arista – before dissolving.
