Among the “adolescent lions,” Rick Margitza is a superb tenor saxophonist most inspired by Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and John Coltrane. He began for the violin when he was four (his grandfather was a cellist and his dad a violinist using the Detroit Symphony), researched traditional piano for a little bit, and also performed oboe before switching to tenor in senior high school. He went to Wayne State School, Berklee, the School of Miami, and lastly Loyola School in New Orleans, where he resided and performed for four years.
