#Fact
Nephew of King Frederik VIII, Queen Alexandra, King George of Greece, Prinsesse Thyra, and Prins Valdemar. Cousin of King Christian X, King Haakon VII, King George V, Prince Albert Victor, Dronning Maud, and Prins Axel.
Grandson of Christian IX.
His father thought little of him and didn't even bother to teach him how to rule the country. This lack of preparation and guidance undoubtedly played a part in his being overthrown.
Stood at nearly ten inches shorter than his father.
Like his father, he was very anti-Semitic and had a number of policies persecuting Jewish people.
When a telegram was brought to him announcing the annihilation of the Russian fleet at Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese war, he read it, stuffed it in his pocket, and went on playing tennis.
He became so overwhelmed with the task of trying to run the Russian Empire during a time of war that it took a serious toll on his physical health. His health actually improved considerably in the months between his deposition and his execution.
The United States could not join World War I until after his abdication, as it meant that the Allies were now all democracies fighting against the absolute monarchies of the Central Powers.
Bore such a strong physical resemblance to his first cousin King George V that when they were in the same room, people had a great deal of trouble telling the two apart.
It is often erroneously stated that he was shot in the head at his execution, according to those who analyzed his skeletal remains, his skull bears no bullet wounds, however.
Great-uncle of Princess Olga Romanoff. Great-great uncle of Francis Mathew.
Nicholas initially abdicated in favor of his son, the Tsarevich Alexei, but swiftly changed his mind after advice from doctors that the heir would not live long apart from his parents who would be forced into exile. Nicholas drew up a new manifesto naming his brother, Grand Duke Michael, as the next Tsar. He issued a statement which was suppressed by the Provisional Government. Grand Duke Michael deferred taking up power until the people were allowed to vote on whether Russia should become a republic or retain the monarchy. Michael was shot on 13 June 1918, at the age of 39.
Portrayed by Michael Jayston in Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), and Sir Ian McKellen in Rasputin (1996).
Following his abdication, Nicholas intended to live in England with his family. King George V (who was the first cousin of both Nicholas and Alexandra) however wanted nothing to do with him and personally forced his government to withdraw its offer of asylum.
Grandson of Tsar Alexander II.
Father of Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Marie, Grand Duchess Anastasia, and Tsarevitch Aleksey Nikolaeyvitch Romanov.
Brother of Alexander (1869-1870), George (1871-1899), Xenia (1875-1960), Grand Duke Michael, and Olga (1882-1960).
Was the eldest son of Czar Aleksandr III and Maria Fyodorova (formerly Princess Dagmar of Denmark).
