Produced in Waco, Texas on February 10, 1976, William Lance Berkman is the son of Cynthia Ann Thomas and Larry Gene Berkman, of Swedish descent. He attended Rice University who plays on the Owls baseball team. William was named the 1997 National School Player of the Year, playing for the legendary Wayne Graham. William was also named a first team All-America by Collegiate Baseball Magazine, Baseball America and The Sporting News. Together with the remainder of the Baseball American honourees, he was encouraged to visit teh White House and dine with then President Bill Clinton.

Lance Berkman is also called “Fat Elvis” and “The Big Puma” and he would prefer to be a baseball coach for the University of Texas at Austin when he retires from MLB.
