Produced Jon David Gruden on August 17, 1963 in Sandusky, Ohio, his family had ties with football. He was a Cleveland Browns fan and was raised in the Roman Catholic faith. He attended Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana where his father served as an assistant to Dan Devine in the University of Notre Dame. He then attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio and afterwards transferred to the University of Dayton. He was a three-year letterman at quarterback under coach Mike Kelly. He graduated with a diploma in communications in 1985.

During his professional career in the NFL, Gruden was a quality control coach, wide receivers coach for the Green Bay Packers and the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders. He was the youngest head coach ever to have won a Super Bowl in the age of 39 years, five months and nine days. The Bucaneers let him go in 2009. He worked as a color analyst for ESPN for the Monday Night Football showings and for ABC/ESPN as a color analyst.

Jon Gruden and his wife, Cindy, have three sons — Jon II (Deuce), Michael and Jayson. His younger brother Jay is now the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals. His wife is from East Tennessee who graduated from the University of Tennessee where he served briefly as a coach in 1986.
