A native of Battle Creek, Michigan, he first rose to prominence after joining the group Metallica in 1986 following the death of their preceding bass player, Cliff Burton and played on a number of their largest selling records, eventually leaving them over a difference of opinion in 2001. Since then, he’s played together with his side project, Echobrain along with short stints with Ozzy Osbourne and Voivod and continues to record and tour, along with establishing Chophouse Records, a California-based label and recording studio before lately forming another new group just understood this time as Newsted.
