While attending Torrance High School, Kendall was drafted out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates which selected him as the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 1992 Major League Baseball Draft.

It was in 1996 when he debuted into MLB with Pittsburgh. In 2000, Pittsburgh signed Kendall into a six-year $60 million contract. However, when the 2004 season finished, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Arthur Rhodes, Mark Redman and some cash consideration. He played together with the Athletics through the 2005-2006 season but in July 2007, he was again traded to the Chicago Cubs where he spent one season. In November of the exact same year, he consented to some one-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. The next year, the Kansas City Royals offered him a two-year deal which he accepted. On July 24, 2012, Jason Kendall formally announced his retirement.
