Fernando began his professional career on March 25, 1997 when he smashed Jorge Morales in just 56 seconds. Fernando successfully defended his title until 1999 and has won over Howard Clarke in a 4th round TKO, Raul Marquez in an 11th round TKO, Winky Wright in a 12th round majority decision, and Ike Quartey in a 12th round unanimous decision. Among his losses included fights against Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and Ricardo Mayorga.

Vargas is a two time world champion who has also won a bronze medal in the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata as an amateur fighter. In 2007, Vargas announced his retirement after winning 26 out of his 21 fights. Nonetheless, in April 2011, Vargas declared his return to boxing with a fight in Las Vegas.
