He attended Detroit Country Day School and later graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While in university, he was worked as an actor in the Boston Shakespeare Company. Then he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale School of Drama, where he also met his future wife Angela Bassett. Vance started his professional performing career on stage. Other famous works contained ER, Flash Forward, and Closer, where he played as Chief Tommy Delk. He now appears on Vengeance. In 2013, he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play because of his part in Lucky Guy.

2In 1987, he competed with fellow "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" actor, Jamey Sheridan, for the same Supporting Actor Tony Award, which neither of them won. Sheridan's nomination that year was for playing the "All My Sons" role of "Chris Keller," which happened to be the character name of Christopher Meloni (another "Law & Order" actor) in the HBO series "Oz." The following year (1988) the same Tony Award for supporting actor was awarded to B. D. Wong, a featured actor on both "Law & Order" and "Oz.".
3Received a Tony Award (his first win after three nominations) for the Broadway play "Lucky Guy," in which he co-starred with Tom Hanks and Richard Masur.
