A hard-swinging tenor saxophonist (who’s no regards to the crossover keyboardist from the same name), Billy Mitchell produced his mark in a number of settings. He proved helpful in Detroit with Nat Towles’ music group and in the past due ’40s, he used Lucky Millinder’s Orchestra in NY. In 1949, Mitchell documented with Milt Jackson, proved helpful in the best rings of Milt Buckner and Gil Fuller, and toured with Woody Herman’s Second Herd for just two a few months. He spent the initial half from the 1950s playing locally in Detroit and was with Dizzy Gillespie’s big music group during 1956-1957, going for a unforgettable solo on “Great Breeze” on the 1957 Newport Jazz Celebration. Mitchell was with Count number Basie’s Orchestra during 1957-1961 and in the first ’60s led a sextet with Al Gray that featured a Bobby Hutcherson. Billy Mitchell cut periods as a head for Dee Gee, Jubilee, Smash, Catalyst, and Xanadu. The important saxophonist passed on due to lung cancers while in his house in NY on Apr 18, 2001.
