Bai Ling Net Worth $3 Million

Ling was created into a creative family — her father was a musician and teacher, while her mother had been a stage performer — but she was primarily raised by her grandmother after Ling’s parents ran afoul of Chinese authorities during the Cultural Revolution. In age 14, Ling was enlisted in the People’s Liberation Army, where she served as an entertainer, singing and dancing for the troops. But the authoritarian setting of the Army didn’t suit Ling, who found herself accused of insubordination for use of tobacco and alcohol. Following the end of her hitch together with the Army, Ling joined a theatre group in Beijing, where she appeared in traditional Chinese plays along with dramas from the West. Ling started receiving little roles in Chinese films, as well as in 1988, Ling starred in Hu Guang, and attended the film’s screening at the Moscow Film Festival; however, she was warned to not discuss political issues, especially those related to the then-recent Tiananmen Square demonstrations (in which Ling took part). Ling traveled to New York City at age 21 in 1991 to study at New York University’s Department of Film, and also to hone her craft at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute; Ling arrived in New York not knowing a word of English, but shortly mastered the language through day-to-day submergence, and became a citizen in 1999. In 1994, Ling landed her first American film role, as the villainous Myca in the dark fantasy The Crow.

#Quote
1[on her role in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)] A lot of my friends asked, "What's it like working with Jude Law? He's so handsome!" I said, "Well, I'm lucky; I got to kick his butt".
#Fact
1Perhaps her first public appearance in the U.S. was on Jan. 16, 1994, when she accepted the Best Supporting Actress Award on behalf of the winner, her countrywoman Li Gong, who could not attend, at the annual New York Film Critics Circle ceremony held at the Pegasus Room (Rockefeller Center).
2Arrested for shoplifting at Los Angeles International Airport on February 13, 2008.
3She turned in one of her most acclaimed performances in her first Hong Kong movie Saam gaang yi (2004) ("Three Extremes: Dumplings"). Her character is a creepy 60-year-old ageless beauty, and she helps women by performing illegal abortions, but also uses the unwanted fetuses to be made into dumplings, which is her secret for ageless beauty.
4Was the July 2007 entry in Stuff magazine's 2006-2007 pin up calendar.
5Cut off most of her waist-length hair for her role in Anna and the King (1999).
6She took classes at The Lee Strasberg Institute (1991) and New York University. (1991)
7Claimed that her role on Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) was cut during editing because of her posing for the June 2005 issue of US "Playboy" magazine. She was the first woman from the People's Republic of China on its cover. George Lucas strongly denied that this was the reason she was cut.
8Member of the jury at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) in 2005. Memorable for her light dresses that didn't always cover her essentials all the time. German tabloids nicknamed her "die Berlinackte" ("the Berlinaked").
9Name means "white spirit" in English.
10Lives in Southern California.
11Had a four-line appearance in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005). Unfortunately her appearance (along with a small cameo of George Lucas' daughter) got cut out. Lucas explained, "It wasn't like it was a major thing to begin with and I just cut that whole secondary story out of the movie quite a while ago".
12Bai Ling served three years in the People Liberation's Army in China entertaining troops in Tibet. She had a bout of depression which sent her to a mental hospital. She then became a Chinese movie star. All of this occurred before she was 18.
13One of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World 1998".
